Five killed and 50 injured in collision near Carletonville

Five people have been killed and at least 50 others injured this morning when a bus and light motor vehicle collided head-on on the Welverdiend Road near Carletonville.

ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene and found the bus and light motor vehicle both lying on the side of the road. The light motor vehicle had been completely ripped open in the collision.

On inspection, paramedics discovered the lifeless bodies of five woman lying inside the light motor vehicle. Unfortunately all five patients had sustained fatal injuries and had already succumbed to their injuries prior to the arrival of paramedics.

At least 50 other patients were found on scene with minor injuries. Most of the patients were children on their way to school. Paramedics from multiple services set up a staging area on scene and began treating the patients for their injuries.

Once treated, the patients were transported to nearby hospitals including Carletonville Hospital for further medical treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.

Update:

The total number of children on the bus was 127. Most of the children sustained minor injuries while some fortunately escape unharmed. All the children were assessed and treated on scene.
