Man airlifted after head- on collision on the R512 near Broederstroom

A man believed to be in his 40’s was left in a critical condition after a head on collision on the R512 near Broederstroom this morning.

An off duty paramedic from ER24 came across the incident shortly after 0700 this morning where he found a BMW mangled into the side barrier of the road. On inspection he found the driver trapped behind the steering wheel of his vehicle. While rendering care he [the paramedic] alerted the ER24 Emergency Contact Centre to dispatch resources to the scene.

The driver of the vehicle had to be freed from the wreckage by the local fire department using hydraulic rescue equipment and the Jaws of Life. He was treated on the scene for multiple injuries.

The ER24 medical helicopter was called to the scene to airlift him [the driver] to Mediclinic Sandton for further care.

It is believed the collision occurred when the BMW and a truck collided head on with each other. The driver of the truck was assessed on the scene. He sustained no physical injuries and was only in shock.

The R512 near the Dietmar Art Gallery in Broederstroom was closed off for some time while rescuers were busy on the scene.
