Mount Road SAPS members arrested for corruption after road offence

Port Elizabeth Organised Crimes Unit arrested two (2) Mount Road SAPS members , Sergeant Mzwandile Mventshana, 42 and Constable Khayalethu Hlamvana, 36, in the morning of Wednesday 15 April 2015, after an instruction was issued by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It is alleged that on the 30th of December 2014 at about 02:00, the two members were driving in a marked police vehicle, stopped a motor vehicle and accused the driver of driving under the influence of alcohol. They demanded an amount of R150 in return for not laying a charge against him.

They appeared in the Port Elizabeth Specialized Commercial Crimes Court on the same day of their arrest on two counts of corruption .

The case was remanded for 29 April 2015 for legal representation. The suspects are out on warning.

The Mount Road Station Commander, Colonel Tony Nomdoe welcomed the arrest. “The arrest shows our commitment to fighting crime, even when our own members are involved. This should send a strong message to other would-be offenders that we will not handle police corruption with soft-gloves. We expect police officers to abide and respect our Code of Conduct and those transgressing it , do not belong in a blue uniform, “ he said.
