Passenger killed when ejected in R26 collision

A man believed to be in his early twenties died yesterday afternoon when he was ejected from a vehicle during a collision on the R26 near Ficksburg.

Shortly before 4pm paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene where they found an overturned bakkie in the middle of the road. The driver of the bakkie was found near the vehicle with moderate injuries. The driver explained to paramedics that he had a passenger in the bakkie with him that he picked up earlier to give a lift.

They [paramedics] found the passenger in the nearby veld with fatal injuries. Unfortunately there was nothing that they could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene.

It is understood that the driver of the bakkie tried to overtake a truck shortly before it attempted to turn into a farm road, colliding with the side of the bakkie. No one was injured in the truck.

The incident was handed over to the local authorities for investigation.
