Traffic law offenders and criminals in general around Ntuzuma Township, north of Durban, had a hard time yesterday when Umdloti RTI female officers together with the Ntuzuma SAPS and the Department of Community Safety volunteers staged a road-block and raided hot-spot areas around the township.
The initiative formed part of the conclusion of the Women’s Month programme that has seen women in uniform conducting operations all over the province.
Dagga, laptops, cell-phones, sound system, flat screen TVs were some of the stolen goods recovered during the raids.
UMdloti Provincial Inspector Londiwe Ndlovu said the operation they embarked on was very successful as a number of arrests were made.
“We managed to do this operation without the help of our male colleagues. With the road-block we wanted to ensure the visibility of traffic officers to ensure that our roads are safe at all times,” said Ndlovu.
The successful operation ended up with 15 arrests from different offences including overloading, 10 summons, one suspension and drinking and driving.
At the weekend, RTI female officers from all stations in the province held a gala dinner in the Richard Bay’s Protea Hotel, aimed to encourage and motivate women in law enforcement.
The event was also attended by the RTI Head Victor Chetty and Superintendent Zanele Singene from RTMC in Pretoria.
Supporting the women in uniform, Singene said: “I am proud that you are always visible on KZN roads conducting road-blocks and doing other initiatives to save lives, this shows that you are very serious about your job”.
