Pregnant woman critical after collision

A pregnant woman is in a critical condition this morning following a collision between two vehicles at Great North and Elgin Road intersection in Benoni.

ER24 paramedics, along with provincial services, responded through the heavy morning traffic, and on arrival, they found one vehicle lying off on the side of the road while the second sat in the middle of the intersection.

On assessment, paramedics found that a woman, 8 months pregnant, lay trapped inside the passenger seat of the vehicle in a critical condition.

Provincial services used the jaws-of-life equipment to free the woman from the wrecked vehicle. Once freed, paramedics treated and provided advanced life support interventions to the patient.

The ER24 helicopter was called to transport the critically injured patient to a private hospital for urgent treatment. Two other patients were found on scene with minor injuries. They were treated and transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
