Five vehicles collide leaving 18 injured

18 people have been left injured this morning following a collision on the M1 near the Milkyway Road in Marrion Hill, KwaZulu Natal.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they already found provincial services assisting some of the patients on scene.

Two taxis and three bakkies lay wrecked in the middle of the road. One of the taxis had caught alight and the blaze being battled by fire services.

On assessment, paramedics found that 18 people had been injured in the collision, five of them critically. One of the critically injured patients was the driver of the taxi, who sustained severe burn wounds over his entire body.

Paramedics set out treating the patients and provided the critically injured patients with advanced life support interventions.

Once treated, the patients were transported to various hospitals for urgent treatment.

It is understood that bystander that had witness the collision began pulling occupants from the vehicles and began extinguishing the taxi fire.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
