A 39-year-old suspect is due to appear in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court soon to face an attempted murder charge. He was arrested on 4 September 2015 after he allegedly opened fire towards the police.
On the same day, Madadeni police attended to a discharging of a firearm complaint at a house in Madadeni area near Newcastle. On their arrival, the suspect randomly opened fire towards the members and the members retaliated; he was shot and wounded in the leg.
A 9mm pistol licensed to him was recovered and he was arrested for attempted murder. He was taken to hospital under police guard and will appear in court once discharged from hospital.
The recovered firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province.
