Three killed, scores injured in freak collision

Three man have been killed and 29 others injured this morning after a bakkie and trailer crashed into a tree on the N3 near Town Hill in Pietermaritzburg.

ER24 paramedics, along with other services, received the emergency call and responded to the scene.

On arrival, paramedics found a bakkie and trailer crushed up against a tree. Occupants that had been sitting in the back of the bakkie as well as the trailer were now found scattered around the scene.

Three men were found lying trapped inside the bakkie. On assessment, paramedics found that all three men had unfortunately succumbed to their fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for the patients.

29 other patients were found scattered on scene, their injuries ranging from serious to minor.

Paramedics set up a triage area to treated the patients as well as provide the seriously injured patients with advanced life support interventions.

Once treated, the patients were transported to various hospitals in the area for further care.

It is understood that a number of the occupants had been in the back of the bakkie as well as sitting in the trailer at the time of the collision.

The three bodies in the bakkie were later removed by rescue services using the jaws-of-life equipment.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
