On 26 September 2015 at 08:30, police from Wartburg were performing crime prevention duties in the area when they stopped a minibus taxi. Police searched the occupants of the minibus and discovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol with 15 live rounds of ammunition. A 33-year-old passenger was arrested and charged for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspect is due to appear in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court today.
In another incident, Wartburg police arrested a 38-year-old man for murder a day after the above-mentioned crime occurred. He is due to appear in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court today for murder. On 26 September2015 at 06:30, Vumani Dzanibe (37) was at the Swayimane area in Wartburg when he was shot several times by a known suspect. The victim attempted to walk to his place of residence but collapsed and died. His alleged killer fled the scene on foot. A case of murder was opened at the Wartburg Police Station and police immediately began with the investigation. On 27 September 2015, the suspect was traced and arrested; he was found in possession of a 9mm licensed pistol suspected to be used in the commission of the crime.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended Wartburg Police for arresting both suspects for their crimes.
“The swift response from police in both cases is commendable. Both firearms will be subjected to ballistic tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes within the country”, she said.
