Vehicle stopped and abalone confiscated in Khayelitsha

Yesterday morning, members from the Western Cape Provincial Organized Crime and Cape Town K9 Units responded to information of a vehicle allegedly transporting abalone from Gansbaai to Cape Town and conducted patrols in Khayelitsha.

At approximately 08:30 the white Volkswagen panel van was pulled over at the corners of Bonga and Japhta Masemola Roads. Upon searching the vehicle they recovered numerous plastic bags of shucked abalone. The occupants of the vehicle, a man (27) and a woman (31) who are both from Khayelitsha, were arrested.

Officials from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries were summoned to the police station where the abalone was counted. It amounted to 8 396 units of shucked abalone with an estimated value of R2 million.
