Driver injured in N2 North Higginson Highway crash

This morning just after 09h00 I was driving along the N2 North towards Umhlanga when I came across a vehicle with a husband, wife and baby pulled to the side of the highway. After stopping to help I noticed the front part of the vehicle severely damaged, the occupants was exiting the vehicle and standing in the centre median.

Reports indicate that a bakkie traveling on the south bound carriage way lost his wheel. The wheel with the Tyre Rod attached became a missile as it bounced across the centre median, and with a last bounce hit the vehicle of the family on the driver side windshield.

The impact was so great the roof collapsed and the tyre crushed the drives hand against the steering wheel, and with the roof collapsing it hit him in the head before bouncing over the car. Fortunately the baby was in a car seat in the back of the vehicle with mom, both escaping without injury.

The driver was stabilised at the scene before medics transported him to a local hospital for the care that he required.
