RTI and Road Safety Team promote road safety during annual Cars in the Park event

The Department of Transport’s Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Road Safety directorates last Sunday attended the annual Cars in the Park event which was held at the Ashburton Training College in Pietermaritzburg.

Car enthusiasts from all over Pietermaritzburg flocked to the annual Cars in the Park event which is aimed at celebrating the classic, the elegant, the quirky and the unique when it comes to vehicles of all shapes, sizes and stats.

The RTI and Road Safety staff attended the event to promote road safety among motorists, as well as to show off RTI’s two new motorcycles which are used during law enforcement activities such as escorting dignitaries and will be used during sports events such as the Comrades Marathon.

Mkondeni RTI’s Chief Provincial Inspector and Provincial Commander for Motorcycle Squad Chris Vanbiljon said that the 16 000 GT motorcycles are multipurpose and are valued at R250 000.
“These motorcycles are an asset to RTI and serve many vital law enforcement purposes. We are also intending to utilize them for high visibility patrols especially during peak seasons such as the Festive season and during Easters. We will continue to explore all avenues in order to strengthen our zero tolerance approach on our provincial roads,” said Vanbiljon.

Principal Road Safety Officer Jolene Boulton said participation at the Cars in the Park festival is a two-pronged opportunity for the Road Safety Directorate.

“We are able to interact with members of motoring clubs to educate them about the risks involved in utilising modified vehicles on public roads and we encouraging members to transport their vehicles in appropriate trailers. We were also able to interact with motoring enthusiasts to demonstrate road safety and enforcement as an integrated system that promotes safer road usage,” she said.
