One killed, another injured in head-on collision, Vanderbijlpark.

A 42-year-old man was killed and another critically injured early this morning after a taxi and bakkie collide head-on on the R42 in Vanderbijlpark.

ER24 paramedics, along with another service, arrived on the scene and found that a taxi and bakkie had collided at apparent high speed.

A crumpled taxi was found lying in the middle of the road while a bakkie, completely ripped open, was found lying on the side of the road.

On inspection, paramedics found the 42-year-old taxi driver lying motionless inside his vehicle. Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on scene.

A 28-year-old man was found lying trapped inside his wrecked bakkie in a critical condition. Rescue services had to use specialised rescue equipment in an hour-long operation to free that patient.

Once freed, paramedics treated the man and provided him with multiple advanced life support intervention. He was thereafter transported to Sebokeng Hospital for urgent treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
