Head-on collision leaves one dead and another critical, N5

One man was killed and another critically injured this evening after a head-on on collision between two vehicles on the N5 between Bethlehem and Kestal in the Free State.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found two wrecked vehicles on scene. One of the vehicles lay in the middle of the road while the second lay on its side on the side of the road.

On further inspection, paramedics found a man lying trapped and motionless in his vehicle. Unfortunately the man had already succumbed to his multiple fatal injuries. Nothing more could be done for the patient and he was declared dead on scene.

A second man was found to be lying trapped in his vehicle in a critical condition.

Rescue services, using specialised tools, made quick work of extricating the patient from the vehicle.

Once freed, paramedics treated the patient and provided him with advanced life support interventions. He was thereafter transported to a private hospital for urgent treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
