2015 was ‘The Year of the SUV’ for Mercedes-Benz as they introduced new models to their already extensive SUV range.
This refreshed SUV range includes four all-new additions to the extensive SUV range from Mercedes-Benz – the sporty GLA, the luxurious GLC, the stylish GLC Coupé and the sexy GLE Coupé – and the new-generation GLE and GLS model ranges.
To showcase these vehicles on South African terrain, Mercedes-Benz SA infused an extended campaign with local content, through film for social platforms. In each episode, an unlikely duo travels to a remote corner of southern Africa in one of the remarkable new Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
The all-new GLE Coupé takes songbird Lira and comedian Loyiso Gola to northern KwaZulu-Natal where they beautifully re-imagine a traditional Zulu song. In Namibia, world-renowned fashion designer Craig Jacobs and actress Lerato Kganyago, driving in luxury in their GLC, draw inspiration from the dunes of the Namib Desert to create bespoke African couture. Cricket legend Mark Boucher and chef extraordinaire Marthinus Ferreira journey to the Wild Coast in the GLE to prepare a signature three-course meal. And when the legendary G Class brings photographer Adrian Steirn and lion whisperer Kevin Richardson together, they capture what could, sadly be the future of our continent’s magnificent wild lions. Their haunting image has been featured in media the world over.
In this week’s episode, iconic trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and MiCasa front-man J’Something talk the language of music as they drive along the Garden Route in the new GLS. Their task is to record an original song, which results in “Heaven in You” with its haunting lyrics that tell of Hugh’s love for his homeland despite his exile during the country’s troubled past.
“These films celebrate our culture and diversity, and also showcase our vehicles’ capabilities,” says Selvin Govender, Marketing Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars. “We’re highlighting our country’s encompassing beauty and bringing home what South Africans love about their country while we position Mercedes-Benz SUVs as luxury vehicles for the South African journey.”
Govender adds that the genes from the iconic G-Class are carried into each of the current Mercedes-Benz SUVs, making them the best on every terrain!
