Two people were killed and another person was left with critical injuries after a truck and a bakkie collided head on with each other on the R617 in Impendle near Boston, Pietermaritzburg.
Shortly after 4.30pm paramedics and fire fighters arrived on the scene where they found the two vehicles crushed together. The driver of the bakkie and a passenger in the truck was found with fatal injuries. The driver of the truck, believed to be in his sixties, was found with critical injuries ranging from open fractures and partial amputations.
Paramedics could only access part of the man’s trapped body. Paramedics and firefighters struggled for almost three hours to free the severely entrapped man from the wreckage. Once freed, paramedics were able to fully assess the extent of his injuries. He was treated on the scene and rushed through to Greys Hospital for further medical care.
The truck was carrying cows at the time of the collision. One of the cows were ejected from the back of the truck and flung over the bakkie. It was found lying several meters behind the bakkie in the road. The cow succumbed to its injuries on the scene.
The exact cause for the collision is not yet known. Local authorities attended the scene and will conduct an investigation.
