Man killed after being pinned beneath his overturned bakkie on the N2

A man, believed to be in his 20s, was killed this morning after he was pinned beneath his overturned bakkie on the N2 before the Raapenburg turn-off in Athlone in the Western Cape.

ER24 paramedics, along with Metro and fire services, arrived on the scene and found the bakkie lying on its roof in the slow lane of the highway.

On further assessment, paramedics found the body of the man lying beneath the bakkie.

Unfortunately, the man had already succumbed to his injuries. Nothing more could be done for the man and he was declared dead on the scene.

It is believed that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into the roadside barrier and overturn. The man was then apparently ejected from the vehicle and pinned beneath.

Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free the man from beneath the vehicle.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
