Community tip-off results in arrest and recovery of illegal firearms

Western Cape: In our quest to remove dangerous suspects and illegal firearms from our communities, police from Delft SAPS acted diligently after a tip-off was received from the community last night, 9 March 2017 at 22:10.

The tip-off was about a Silver VW Polo Vivo and a Toyota Avanza that were reportedly occupied by men of whom at least one was armed. Police members spotted the vehicles near the taxi rank, where the passenger of the Polo jumped out of the vehicle and evaded arrest. The driver of the VW Polo, a 41-year-old man was arrested and firearms found in his vehicle were confiscated. The Toyota Avanza was parked alongside the Polo, and police members found another firearm inside it. In total, three firearms, including a Norinco .45 automatic, a P38 Parabellum and an Uzzi firearm, all with ammunition, were eventually seized.

The arrested suspect will appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on Monday 13 March 2017, and willface charges of Possession of an unlicensed firearm, Possession of Ammunition and Possession of a Prohibited firearm.

This arrest of an armed suspect and the taking of firearms and ammunition off our streets, were the direct result of the Western Cape community’s involvement with the SAPS in making our communities safe. The partnership approach in policing, followed by SAPS and communities in the Western Cape, benefit our community members and assist with the protection of our police members working on the ground. These successes are making a huge impact on the ability of the SAPS to prevent crime.
