Motor vehicle collision on North Coast Road, Durban

At approximately 02:00 on Sunday morning, the Marshall Security Emergency Contact Centre received a call for a serious motor vehicle collision on Chris Hani (North Coast) road, near the Moreland Drive intersection, in the suburb of Red Hill, north of Durban.

Reaction officers were immediately dispatched and a call was made for the assistance of Netcare911 emergency care practitioners, as well as the Ethekwini Fire and Rescue Services. On arrival on scene, a minibus taxi was found to have left the road way and collided with a tree. One of the occupants had sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on arrival of paramedics. A commuter seated in the front of the wreckage had sustained critical injuries and was entrapped in the mangled remains of the minibus. Advanced Life Support intervention was needed to stabilize the man before he was cut free from the wreckage using the ‘Jaws-of-Life’.

Once free he was placed onto a mechanical ventilator to assist him in breathing, and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further definitive care.

Eight other commuters sustained injury ranging from minor to moderate and were attended to on scene, before being taken by ambulances to various nearby facilities for further care.

The cause of the collision is unknown and will form subject of a South African Police Services investigation.
