Transport Minister & Deputy Minister to intensify road safety & law enforcement operations during the Easter weekend

The Minister of Transport, Mr Joe Maswanganyi and the Deputy Minister Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga, will conduct road safety education, awareness and law enforcement activities at the Wanderers taxi rank in the Johannesburg CBD on Tuesday, 11 April 2017.

The Minister and Deputy Minister will start with a walkabout from the nearby Park Train Station as well as the bus terminal where they will interact with commuters. They will then proceed to the Wanderers taxi rank.

Their visit to the long distance terminals forms part of the Department of Transport’s 2017 Easter Road Safety Campaign and it comes ahead of the long Easter weekend.

During this period South Africans are expected to travel long distances to different destinations.

Some of the commuters use the Wanderers Taxi Rank which is a home to taxis operating across Southern Africa to countries such as Lusaka, Malawi, Swaziland, Maputo, Botswana, Namibia and Lesotho.

The Rank further houses domestic operators of long distance destinations such Kwa Zulu-Natal, Limpopo, Free State, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Mpumalanga and North West.

The aim of the Minister and Deputy Minister’s visit is to drive the road safety education, awareness and enforcement ahead of the long weekend.  Their activities will focus on passengers specifically on their role to be alert, active participants throughout their journey and watch out for symptoms of fatigue on their drivers.

The passenger’s role is to ensure that the driver does not use the mobile phone and does not take or be given alcohol but water whilst driving.
