Serious motor vehicle collision on the M4 near Umdloti

A female believed to be in her forties has been left fighting for her life following a serious motor vehicle collision on the M4 near Umdloti earlier this evening.

Crisis Medical Paramedics arrived on the scene to find a light motor vehicle had collided into the rear of a truck and trailer carrying Citrus, which was stationary on the left shoulder of the roadway, after losing part of its load.

A man who was attending to the load at the rear of the trailer was struck by the light motor vehicle before it overturned. He suffered moderate injuries and was attended to on scene before being taken to hospital for further care.

Two occupants of the light motor vehicle suffered injuries, with the driver of the vehicle, a female believed to be in her forties having sustained serious injuries.

Advanced Life Support intervention was needed to stabilize her, before she was placed onto a specialised stretcher for suspected spinal cord injuries. A passenger in the vehicle, also female approximately thirty years of age, sustained moderate injures.

Both females were treated and stabilized on scene before being taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further definitive care.

The roadway remained closed to traffic whilst emergency services worked to clear the scene.

The cause of the incident and the facts surrounding it will form subject of a South African Police Services investigation.
