At approximately 03:30 the Marshall Security Emergency Contact Centre received an alert of multiple alarm activations from a premesis is In Avoca Road in the Avoca area.
Armed reaction officers were immediately dispatched to the scene and whilst conducting a check of the property, one of the officers noted a glass sliding door had been forced open and entry to the property had been gained. The officer was confronted by a male suspect armed with a large knife.
The suspect advanced at the officer who drew his firearm, firing a shot in an attempt to defend himself, striking the suspect.
Crisis Medical Paramedics were called to the scene and the suspect was treated and stabilized on scene before being taken under police guard to a nearby hospital.
The suspect is believed to have been involved in several incidents of housebreaking in the area of late.
The scene was secured and handed over to the South African Police Services for further investigation and processing.
