The Department of Transport’s Pinetown Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) has recently welcomed Roshan Singh as its new Station Commander.
Singh was promoted as Station Commander on the 1st of July 2017. He was previously serving the Department’s RTI Training College in Pietermaritzburg as the Chief of Training where he served for 20 years.
Singh, 53, was born and bred in Pietermaritzburg. He matriculated in Esther Payne Smith Secondary School, Pietermaritzburg in 1980. He holds a Diploma in Traffic and Municipal Management, a Diploma in Occupational Development, Educational and Training Practitioner among others.
Singh has vast experience in law enforcement. His career began in 1983 at Richmond Municipality where he worked for five years as a Traffic Officer. Seven years later he joined the Msunduzi Municipality as a Traffic and Training Officer. In 1994 he joined the Department of Transport’s Verulam RTI as a Senior Provincial Inspector.
In 1997 he was promoted to Chief of Training at RTI Traffic Training College in Pietermaritzburg.
Asked about his recent promotion Singh said: “It’s a different field altogether for me, very challenging. The Pinetown RTI station is massive; it’s like a region on its own. I have about 90 members of staff reporting to me. I am normally in the office by 05h30am and leave the office around 19h00pm. It’s important for me to see and engage with the morning shift staff as well as the afternoon shift staff. Nevertheless, I’m enjoying my work,” said Singh.
Singh further explained that he has implemented a lot of changes since his appointment such as implementing control measures in order to improve service delivery.
“We have more plans which include developing the station by adding more buildings, because we lack space which results in people queuing outside. This is not ideal. We are also trying to find ways to get rid of corruption, which is very rife at our station at the moment. RTI has very limited resources in terms of manpower, we would like to increase the number of traffic officers in order to be more visible on the roads. We also need more staff in our administration section. In spite of all the challenges facing the station, RTI Pinetown managed to be the best performing station over the festive period last year, we plan to do the same this year,” said Singh.
