Women in traffic law enforcement stage traffic blitz in Ulundi.

The Department of Transport’s Empangeni Region Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) marked Women’s Month yesterday with women in traffic law enforcement staging a traffic blitz in Ulundi.
Female officers from Empangeni Region RTI stations joined in an all-women’s roadblocks together with the South African Police Services (SAPS) and Ulundi Municipality Traffic Officers.

Operations were conducted in all main red spots areas in Ulundi including main road R66 Ulundi 19, Mayiwane, Mahlabathini and King Dingizulu Highway. The aim of the operation was to inspect vehicles for roadworthiness, ensure that drivers were not under the influence of alcohol, check for overloads and to create awareness for road traffic safety.

Nongoma RTI Chief Provincial Inspector Gugu Zuma said that the aim of conducting the roadblocks was to send a clear message that lawlessness would not be tolerated on the road.

“This operation is an indication that women are capable of conducting successful law enforcement activities on their own. As women we will continue to vigorously conduct law enforcement activities even beyond Women’s Month,” said Zuma.

About 197 vehicles were stopped and checked, 105 of those vehicles were charged with various traffic law infringements, one suspension and one arrest for producing false documentation was made.

After the roadblocks, the team then proceeded to donate food parcels to four needy families around Ulundi.

“As a sign of humanity, as the Ulundi Cluster we saw the need to lend a helping hand as mothers, by identifying needy families in order to donate food parcels. We were able to identify four child-headed families,” said Zuma.
