“People don’t seem to realise that while their modern cars are capable, they may not be”

We would like to share an email sent to the Arrive Alive website:

“On our drive to Durban from Johannesburg yesterday, I was appalled at the number of reckless drivers – especially at night between 6 pm and 9 pm from Harrismith to Durban. Some of the issues:

 

– cars with no lights

– drivers weaving around other vehicles at high speed

– many drivers breaking the speed limit

– drivers speeding up on the left lane and cutting in front of cars on the right without indicating causing those on the right to slow down suddenly

– a bakkie stopped on the emergency lane tried to get into the high-speed traffic without building enough speed to join the moving vehicles. Could have caused a serious disaster

– trucks overtaking uphill. This often happens but at night is extremely dangerous

– drivers flashing lights from behind even when there is nowhere to go. Tailgating.

Visibility is extremely poor at night on the N3 and drivers seem to behave worse then than during the day. Maybe it is a different kind of driver at night.

People don’t seem to realise that while their modern cars are capable, they may not be. Also, the N3 or any public road is not a race track. You have drivers with different skill levels and lots of other variables that are not the same as a racing situation. Hence the probability of a crash is heightened

Clearly, more action must be taken to deal with these drivers. ”
