Walkerville taxi rollover leaves one dead and seventeen injured

A woman was killed and seventeen others injured this morning when a taxi rolled, ejecting most of the occupants, off the R82 in Walkerville, south of Johannesburg.

ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene to find the taxi lying on its side on a gravel road, a short distance away from the R82.

The passengers, that had been traveling in the taxi, were found lying outside the vehicle. Paramedics began assessing the patients on the scene and found that one woman had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life.

Unfortunately, nothing could be done for her and she was declared dead. Seventeen other patients were assessed by paramedics. Three were found to have sustained critical injuries while fourteen had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

The patients were treated for their injuries, and the critically injured provided with advanced life support interventions. The ER24 Oneplan Helicopter was called to the scene to airlift one of the critically injured patients to a nearby hospital and later returned to airlift a second, critically injured patient.

The remaining patients were transported to various hospitals for further treatment.

The cause of the incident is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
