KZN Transport commended for apprentice programme

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport continues to provide training and skills development through its Apprentice Programme. The programme which is based at the department’s Technology Transfer (T2) Centre, is aimed at providing training and skills development for Artisans, in order to equip them with the necessary knowledge and understanding in their field.

In this regard, many Artisans have benefitted, and are now sharing their expertise in mechanics with the department by repairing trucks and graders.

According to Simangele Mngomezulu who is the Director of the T2 Centre and programme coordinator, the aim is to capacitate the department with earthmoving mechanics Artisans, which remains a scarce skill.

“The program is similar to an internship, but the difference is that it is more technical and a very intense type of trade. The programme was started in 2014. In terms of recruitment, the department advertises externally and candidates who are in possession of Matric with Maths and Science subjects or N2, are recruited.”

“The trainees are sent to colleges where they attend classes for a period of three months. After three months they come back to the department where they focus on practical work. Others go to the private sector for more technical exposure,” added Mngomezulu.

One of the female beneficiaries of this programme is Thandazile Mbonambi, who is an Earthmoving Mechanical Apprentice stationed at the Stanger Cost Centre.

Mbonambi, 37, says that the programme has afforded her a lot of work experience and training in her field.

“The program has given me the necessary skills base and knowledge. I have grown so much and I can safely say that I am now competent in this field. If it wasn’t for the programme, I would not have achieved the confidence I have now to perform my tasks in a previously male-dominated field. I hope to be exemplary to other women who are pursuing careers in male-dominated fields. Phambili ngeMbokodo!” said Mbonambi.
