Robbery Suspects Arrested at Gateway in Umhlanga, KZN

Three robbery suspects including a 24-year-old pregnant woman were arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa outside the Gateway Shopping Centre in Umhlanga a short while ago.

The RUSA Operations Centre received a call from a woman on Moss Street in the Verulam CBD requesting assistance after she had been robbed of her handbag containing her valuables, mobile phones and a packet containing new clothes and a new pair of takkies. The victim informed the controller on duty that the suspects had fled in an awaiting VW Golf 1. She also managed to provide a registration as well as the direction the vehicle had fled.

Reaction Officers began searching for the vehicle which was spotted traveling at high speed down Old Main Road in Ottawa. A chase ensued however the vehicle was lost due to the driver driving erratically through traffic. Details of the vehicle was circulated to Reaction Officers in all areas & the suspects were once again spotted on the R102 by a RUSA Member who was traveling in the opposite direction. Several response vehicles were dispatched and the suspects vehicle was boxed in an stopped outside the Gateway Shopping Centre.

A search of the vehicle was conducted and the stolen items belonging to the victim was recovered. 7 mobile phones were also recovered. The suspects were placed under arrest and transported to the Verulam SAPS where they were positively identified by the victim. According to the victim the female suspect who is 5 months pregnant was the person who had grabbed her bag and ran to the getaway vehicle. Several other items including wallets, clothing and handbags which is believed to have been taken in other robberies were also found in the boot of the vehicle.

All three suspects are currently detained at the Verulam SAPS.
