Four suspects arrested following Tongaat shooting

Four suspects were arrested at Tongaat immediately after a shooting incident yesterday. Their firearms including three rifles and a pistol were seized and will be subjected to ballistic tests to confirm if they were used during the shooting. The four men, between 24 and 37 years are due to appear in the Verulam Magistrates Court soon facing charges of murder and attempted murder.

On 21 August 2018 at 14.30 the victims were traveling in their vehicle along Gopalall Hurbans Road in Tongaat, when they were attacked by the suspects. It is alleged that the suspects opened fire at the moving vehicle which caused the driver to lose control and collide into a tree. The driver, Simphiwe Lungani Sithole (21) was fatally wounded while the three passengers were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

Local police were immediately notified of the shooting and the four suspects were arrested. Their firearms were also seized for the purpose of investigation. Whilst the motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage, detectives are working around the clock to place the suspects before court.
