Update on public violence which erupted in Mphambo Village in the Malamulele Policing precinct outside Giyani

Following the public violence which erupted in Mphambo Village in the Malamulele Policing precinct outside Giyani in the evening of Saturday 2018-07-28 which led to the damage of Police vehicles, five (05) suspects were arrested for assault GBH and 06 counts of malicious damage to property.

These suspects have briefly appeared before the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court and they were each released on bail of R500.00 each and their cases were postponed until 12 September 2018 for further Police investigations.

The suspects were identified as follows:

* Tinyiko Given Maluleke aged 36.

* Hluvukani Maluleke aged 30.

* Tinyiko Walter Maluleke 34.

* Rhulani Vincent maluleke aged 38.

* Godfrey Chauke aged 25.

The deceased Dennis Hlungwani aged 37 of Mphambo Village was shot multiple times by a Warrant Officer attached to the Giyani Public Order Police who then ran away and disappeared but he was later arrested.

The motive behind this incident is not clear at this stage however ongoing investigations by the Police and IPID continue.

Subsequent to this shooting, members of the community started mobilizing themselves and attacked the Police who reacted to this murder crime scene. One Police Captain was seriously injured and six (06) Police motor vehicles were damaged by the angry mob.

The Police in Malamulele have since opened cases of murder and malicious damage to property.

The Police investigations are still continuing.
