MEC Kaunda urges road users to abide by the rules of the road during the long weekend.

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda has urged motorists in the province to abide by the rules of the road during the long weekend.

Since Friday, the province has been experiencing an increase in the volume of traffic as holiday makers visit various destinations. Kaunda has urged road users to drive responsibly and observe the road rules to save lives. In some parts of the province we are experiencing heavy rains. “Therefore we call upon motorists to be extremely cautious, keep following distance and switch on the head lights,” said Kaunda.

He also urged those who are travelling long distances to allocate themselves enough time so that they don’t rush and get enough rest along the road.

Law enforcement officers including the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), municipal traffic officers across the province and SAPS have heightened their visibility and conducting law enforcement operations throughout the province.

“Un-roadworthy vehicles, drinking and driving and over-speeding will not be tolerated,” said Kaunda.

He urged all road users to cooperate with law enforcement officers since road safety is a collective responsibility. “Members of the SAPS, working with community crime fighting structures, will be on high alert in the province to ensure that people have a peaceful long weekend,” said Kaunda.
