News: Operation clampdown, forty suspects arrested in Sophiatown

Dangerous weapons consisting of, Pellet guns, knives, scissors and screwdrivers are part of the exhibits that police members have seized during the arrest of twenty (20) suspects for various crimes including assault with grievous bodily harm in Sophiatown policing area during weekend clampdown operations.

Other suspects were arrested for possession of drugs, rape, business break-in, theft and malicious damage to property. The suspects are set to appear in the Sophiatown Magistrate’s Court this week.

Members of the Tactical Response Teams that are conducting operations in Sophiatown following protests and a visit by the Minister of Police Bheki Cele, are responding to more complaints and information from the members of the community. Some of the complaints that resulted in the arrests for assault and malicious damage to property are arising from domestic violence related incidents.

Meanwhile, stop-and-search operations and response to other complaints achieved the following arrests:

• 10 arrests for drug related crimes during which mandrax tablets, crystal meth and dagga were seized;

• 6 for business break-in, housebreaking and theft;

• 3 for rape, and

• 2 for malicious damage to property and pointing of a firearm.

Various role players are complementing TRT Unit members to deal with investigation into all the reported cases that includes alleged gang violence.
