A man in his twenties was killed in a fire at an informal settlement on Hilltop Drive in Verulam yesterday morning (Saturday).
At approximately 04:34 Reaction Unit South Africa received multiple calls from residents in the area reporting the fire. One caller stated that a male was in the shack and was being burnt alive.
Reaction Officers & RUSA Medics were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival assisted the public to extinguish the fire with buckets of water. The deceased’s charred body was recovered in the debris of the burnt out shack.
According to residents in the area the deceased was under the influence of alcohol. He was last seen entering his home at approximately 01:00. A few hours later they noticed the shack engulfed in flames. Circumstances surrounding the fire is yet to be confirmed.
Police are investigating further.
