Transport committees and multi-million infrastructure project launched in Folweni

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community and Liaison Mr Mxolisi Kaunda has called on transportation committees to play active role in the delivery of road and transport services.

Kaunda was speaking at the launch of the Transportation Committees in Durban following the disbandment of community liaison structures such as Rural Road Transport Forums (RRTFs), Community Road Safety Councils (CRSCs), Public Transport Passengers Association (PTPA).

The disbanded community liaison structures were community-based and instrumental in identifying transports needs in communities. However, the department decided to review these structures and align them with municipal ward committees.

Addressing over 500 stakeholders at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban, Kaunda welcomed the newly elected Transportation Committees. “I am particularly pleased with the progress made by the Department of Transport in successfully establishing Transportation Committees. This will assist us in amplifying the vision of the Department of “Prosperity through Mobility” with these committees. They will also go a long way in speeding up reporting of service delivery challenges in communities” said Kaunda.

In line with the spirit of cooperative governance, the Transformation Committees will close a gap with other government departments and municipalities. “This relationship is crucial in ensuring accountability, equity and accessibility of in delivering government services, said Kaunda.

After the launch of Transport Committees, Kaunda proceeded to eFolweni, south of Durban, where he handed over a contractor – Clive Transport – to the community to commence with the construction of 2.5 km of road (L1578). This project, which is estimated to cost an amount of R105.8 million, will be completed in 18 months.

Over 200 job opportunities will be created in the first phase of the project local people and 13 local emerging contractors will benefit from the project in line with the Department’s radical socio-economic transformation programme. “As the provincial government, we have taken a decision that every contract that is awarded, 35% must be set aside for local beneficiation,” said Kaunda.

This road will link Umlazi and Umbumbulu and provide easy access to Qhosheyiphethe Primary School, Folweni Clinic and Local pension pay points.
