Police delivering on promise to clean up Mamelodi: Eight suspects arrested for possession of firearms and drugs

Eight suspects were arrested on 27 March 2019 as part of the daily operations by the Combat and Response Team launched in Mamelodi on 01 March 2019. The team has been on the ground daily since the launch, and continue to have a positive impact towards a safer and secure Mamelodi.

In the last 24 hours, the members conducted an operation in the Mamelodi, Eesterus and Silverton areas and arrested two suspects for attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms. Police recovered six rifles, one short gun and one revolver; as well as a number of magazines and rounds of ammunition. In addition, a total of six suspects were arrested in Mamelodi East and Silverton for possession of and dealing with drugs. Drugs seized include nyaope and dagga.

Provincial Commissioner of police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has declared the reduction of serious and violent crimes, as well as fight against drugs as two of his priorities aimed at bringing down the levels of crime in the Province.

These successes also come about as police continue to reach out and strengthen relations with communities, with the objective of restoring public confidence in the SAPS. So communities are urged to continue reporting suspicious persons and criminal activities happening in their areas so that police can investigate.
