The upgrade of Main Road P296 will link the townships of Jokisi and Tayside

Main Road P296 is located between Osizweni to Buffalo Links in the Dannhauser Local Municipality, in the Amajuba District under the Hlongwane Traditional Council and iNkosi Ngubane. Main Road P296 serves the Millford and surrounding communities by providing access to the Moyo Primary School, Cooper Primary School, Lengola Secondary School, Nyanyadu Primary School, Malambule Secondary School, Ingabade High School, Okhalweni Primary School, Battersea Park Primary School, Flint, Millford and Fairbreeze pension pay points as well as the Thembalihle Provincial Clinic.

The upgrade of Main Road P296 will link the townships of Jokisi and Tayside and will assist local communities by providing a safe, all-weather access and shorter route to Dundee for the community. The upgrade will also increase buses and taxis on the route, therefore, making travel cheaper and easier. Children will have a choice of schools to go to and the young and elderly will have access to transport closer to their homes when needing to travel.

The project entails the upgrade of Main Road P296 between the areas of Jokisi and Tayside. The total length of this road is approximately 50.967 kilometres. The Department has completed the upgrade of 22 kilometres to blacktop surface. From KM 22 to KM 50.967, the project comprises the construction of 8 structures and the upgrading of 28.727 kilometres of gravel road to a blacktop surface, commencing from KM 22.24 at the intersection of P38 (Jokisi) to KM 50.967 at the intersection of P34/2 (Tayside).

The total estimated cost of the project is R378 million with a total of 28.727 kilometres to be constructed in phases.

Provision has also been made for the inclusion of the National Youth Service (NYS) training in the contract awarded on this project, which will enable students to complete the minimum NQF level 3 training (National Certificate Road Work Construction). Thus far, 224 locals and youth have benefitted from working on the road upgrade, and it is anticipated over the life span of the project 394 locals and youth will benefit from employment opportunities and skills development in the construction industry.

This road development will promote growth within the area by assisting in reducing the unemployment rate and increasing job creation. The entire project is anticipated for completion in the 2021/2022 financial year.
