Upgrade completed of road between Qudeni and Silutshana in KZN

P16-3 starts at Qudeni and ends at Silutshana and comprises of a 44.8 kilometre gravel road with an average width of 7.2m. The road traverses through DC24, which serves the Greytown RRTF Area in the Nquthu Local Municipality and through DC28, which serves the Maphumulo RRTF Area in the Nkandla Local Municipality.

This road commences at the end of P16-2 and intersects with P90 traversing in a northwesterly direction through dense timber forests.

The upgrade of Main Road P16–3 will assist the local communities by providing safe, all-weather access to Makathini Combined Primary School, Etongwe Primary School, Nkwelo Combined Primary School, Dimane Primary School, Mandathane Primary School, Kwamajoli Primary School, Manzawayo Lower Primary School, Engcaza Primary School, Vumukukhaya Junior Primary School, Kranskop Primary School, Maqhubandaba Primary School, Dingley Dell Primary School, Khozindaba Primary School, Emakhabeleni Primary School, Manyane Combined Primary School, Ikuksasa Pre Primary School, Godide High School, Qhudeni Primary School, Mphemba High School, Gubazi Primary School, Dlolwane Combined Primary School, Sibahlegemvelo Junior Primary School, Shekekela Primary School, Mangamuntu Senior Primary School, Mzilankatha Secondary School, Bhugwini High School, Kwandwalane Primary School, Ntanyeni Junior Primary School, Ekhombe Provincial Hospital, Manyane Provincial Clinic, Sibuyane Provincial Clinic, Amakhabela Provincial Clinic and Mabhuqweni Provincial Clinic.

P16-3 experiences medium to heavy traffic especially over peak hours. The remainder of Main Road P16-3 warrants the urgent need to be upgraded to blacktop standards. The contributing factor is that people who travel to the numerous clinics and the hospital in the area have an uncomfortable experience as a result of the long distance travelled on the gravel part of the road.

R147.6 million has been spent to date on the road upgrade thus far, which also includes 1 major structure. 104 Locals were afforded employment opportunities on the upgrade from gravel to blacktop and the construction of a structure on the 11 completed kilometres.

The upgrade of the complete 44.80 kilometre P16-3 road is expected to be completed by 2025, with a projected employment benefit for 274 locals over the course of the construction period.
