Gardener arrested for theft of jewellery in Missionlands

A man employed as a gardener at a home on Russom Street in Verulam was arrested after he confirmed that he had stolen jewellery from his employers residence nearly a month ago.

At approximately 07:45 this morning (Monday) the Reaction Unit South Africa Verulam operations Centre received a call from the homeowner requesting assistance. Upon arrival it was explained that the suspect was employed on a temporay basis to maintain the garden and assist with other chores on the property. Nearly a month ago while assisting with repairs to a ceiling inside the residence the suspect stole a Mangalsutra chain and an imitation gold necklace.

When the homeowner realised that the jewellery was missing he contacted his employee who confirmed that he had taken the jewellery accidently and would return it today. This morning he arrived at the residence and handed over the imitation chain. He claimed that he had misplaced the gold Mangalsutra when the victim contacted RUSA for assistance.

During questioning the Mslasini resident claimed that he had not sold the chain and it may have been stolen by one of his friends who visited him at his home. The suspect was employed by other residents in the area. They also complained that they noticed items of value missing from their homes since they employed the suspect.

The 30 year old was placed under arrest and handed over to the Verulam SAPS for further investigation.
