Anti-gang unit arrest murder suspect

PORT ELIZABETH – A 23-year-old gang affiliate was arrested hours after an alleged murder that took place in an alleyway between Avalon and van Duuren Street in Helenvale in Gelvandale.

It is alleged that on Sunday, 21 July 2019 at about 21:00, Kurtley Bruiners (23) and three friends were standing in an alley next to the boundary wall of Avalon Street when 2 males known to them came up the alleyway from Van Duuren Street. When the 2 males were halfway up the alleyway, one of them started shooting at the group. Bruiners sustained gunshot wounds to the stomach and chest and died on the scene. The other 3 victims managed to escape any injury.

Immediately after the incident, the Anti-Gang Unit and the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation (Gang Investigation) were in pursuit of the suspects. At about 01:00 this morning, 22 July 2019, a 23-year-old suspect was arrested at a house in Zimdahl Street in Gelvandale.

He is detained on a charge of murder and is expected to appear in court soon.
