Pedestrians account for more than a third of road fatalities in South Africa. 1 This is a really shocking statistic; however, it is caused by pedestrians not following or obeying the rules of the road. Unfortunately, pedestrians may not realise that they are putting themselves, and other road users, at risk when disobeying the rules of the road.

It is illegal for pedestrians to walk or run across any national highway or road, but unfortunately, enforcement of this law is very poor. This leads to a lot of risk taking and dangerous road crossing by pedestrians. 1

Pedestrians need to be better educated on the rules of the road and need to make themselves more visible to motorists. Here are some tips on how pedestrians can better protect themselves.
