Foiled cash-in-transit suspects arrested within hours

KWAZULU-NATAL – Following a foiled cash-in-transit heist at a pension pay point in Hibberdene area today, where one guard lost his life and two were wounded, a multidisciplinary team’s efforts yielded results when four suspects were arrested at nearby Kwamadlala location.

The security guards were reportedly delivering cash in the area when a group of armed suspects suddenly fired several shots at them resulting in one security guard succumbing from his injuries on the scene whilst two were wounded. The driver of the armoured vehicle managed to speed off and the suspects fled the scene empty-handed.

A multidisciplinary team including the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, Tactical Response Team (TRT) and K9 units attended the crime scene and a joint operation was swiftly conducted, which resulted in the arrest of four suspects hours later.

An AK 47 and R4 rifles, as well as a handgun, were recovered. The recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of a crime.

The Hawks’ investigation into this case is continuing, meanwhile, the arrested suspects are expected to appear at the Hibberdene Magistrate’s Court soon.
