Residents in high spirit following Mayor Kaunda’s intervention at Isipingo Informal settlements

Residents of Isipingo Transit Camp, Uganda and Pilgrim X Informal settlements are in high spirit following Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda intervention on human settlement projects in Ward 90, Isipingo, south of Durban.

On Sunday, Mayor Kaunda accompanied by the Chairperson of Human Settlement and Infrastructure Committee Councillor Thanduxolo Sabela and City Manager Sipho Nzuza had marathon meetings with the residents of Isipingo Transit Camp, Uganda and Pilgrim X informal settlements where he presented a status report on the Kanku Road Housing project, Pilgrim X and Uganda housing projects.

Addressing the community Mayor Kaunda said that the report back meeting was in line with the Municipality’s commitment of eradicating informal settlements and improving the living conditions of its residents.

“As a caring Municipality, we are committed to providing service delivery through the provision of housing opportunity to some of our most vulnerable people. I am happy to report that development in all the three identified sites is on track and we should be in a position to commence with the Kanku Road Housing project in February 2020, the Pilgrim X Housing Project in February 2021 and the Uganda Informal Settlement upgrade phase 1 in April 2021,” said Kaunda.

Kaunda went on to explain that all the feasibility studies for these projects have been completed and the Provincial Department of Human Settlement has approved Tranche 1 application.

“The development will consist of semi-detached double story high-density housing units and will all have the Municipal waterborne sewage, water and electricity, roads and stormwater infrastructure. We are going to constantly engage with the beneficiaries until the project comes to fruition and I am looking forward to returning to this site in future to handover houses to qualifying beneficiaries,” Kaunda added.
