Suspects arrested with illegal guns

DURBAN – South Coast police acted swiftly in preventing what appeared to be a planned hit. A 40-year-old man was arrested and was found in possession of an AK47 rifle with 23 rounds of ammunition. He appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was remanded into custody until 18 September 2019 for bail application.

Police officers from Mehlomnyama, Cluster Operational Command Centre and Police Emergency Services, conducted an intelligence-driven operation following up on information with regards to a planned killing at Mgolomi on Tuesday night. Yesterday, the police officers executed an operation which led them to a homestead at Mgolomi. The house was searched and a man was found with a bag containing an AK47 assault rifle with 23 rounds of ammunition. The prompt police action prevented bloodshed and the suspect was brought to book.

In another operation, police officers deployed at Greytown followed up on information of a man who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm at Nkomba in Muden. The officers proceeded to an identified homestead where they conducted a search on the house. A 52-year-old man was arrested after he was found in possession of a shotgun with ammunition. The officers then proceeded to Oshikishini, in Muden where they seized another shotgun with ammunition. The suspect (26) was arrested and charged for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
