13-year-old charged with murder

DURBAN – When Tongaat police received a complaint on 18 November 2019, that a 63-year-old woman has been attacked by an unknown person with a hammer and that her granddaughter was screaming for help, they wasted no time and proceeded to Jan Roz Crescent in Fairbreeze. On arrival at the scene, they were greeted by the members of the community and a young lady who was screaming and crying hysterically. The devastated female-led police to the lounge where her grandmother’s lifeless body was lying on the floor.

On questioning, the child stated that she was hanging laundry on the line outside when she heard her granny screaming for help. She went back inside the house and noticed an unknown male assaulting her granny with a hammer. She claimed that she fled and sought assistance from a member of the community who went back to the house, however that man had fled. A case of murder was opened at Tongaat police station for investigation.

Following further investigation, yesterday the mother of a 13-year-old brought her to the police station where she was arrested and charged with murder. She is due to appear in the Verulam Magistrates Court tomorrow.
