Robbery suspects arrested and unlicensed firearms recovered in Verulam

Three wanted robbery suspects were arrested and two unlicensed firearms with fully loaded magazines were recovered in an intelligence-driven operation executed during the early parts of this morning (Monday).

One of the suspects was nabbed by Detectives from the Verulam SAPS yesterday (Sunday). The suspect provided detailed information on the location of two of his accomplices who were in possession of unlicensed firearms.

An early morning operation was planned where Detectives and the Rapid Response Unit consisting of members of Reaction Unit South Africa & the Verulam SAPS proceeded to an informal settlement at the dead-end of Valley View Drive in Redcliffe – Verulam.

The nine (9) heavy-armed Officers made their way through the unpaved pathways and surrounded a house that was pointed out by the suspect in custody. At approximately 03:00 Officers stormed the residence and found an individual sleeping in one of the bedrooms. A 9mm pistol containing 15 rounds of ammunition was recovered under his pillow. The serial number on the firearm was filed off.

The team then proceeded to a second home on Hilltop Drive where a third member of the gang was arrested. He was found in possession of a CZ 75 pistol with its serial number filed off. The firearm contained 15 rounds of ammunition.

A fourth member of the gang was arrested by the Rapid Response Unit two weeks ago. A .38 Special revolver was recovered in his possession.

The gang is believed to be linked to several home and business robberies that have occurred in Verulam and surrounding areas in recent weeks. The . 38 Special revolvers were stolen during a robbery where two security guards were robbed of their firearms while guarding a reservoir in Dawncrest – Verulam. The second firearm stolen in the robbery is yet to be recovered.

All three suspects have been remanded in custody at the Verulam SAPS.
