A suspect behind the Dainfern armed robbery and attempted murder of a Member of Parliament, to appear in court

PARKTOWN – A 27-year old suspect is expected to appear before the Randburg Magistrate Court on Thursday, 23 January 2020, facing charges of armed robbery and attempted murder following an incident on Tuesday, 07 January 2020 where a 59-year old member of parliament was allegedly shot when unknown suspects attempted to rob the victim of his luxury wrist-watch at a residential estate in Dainfern, in the Douglasdale policing area.

It is alleged that the suspects driving in a red VW Golf followed the victim up to the boom-gate of the residential complex where the incident took place.

The suspect was arrested during a joint intelligence-driven operation on Tuesday, 21 January 2020. The 27-year-old has at this stage been linked to a Villeria case of possession of an unlicensed firearm from last year, for which he is expected to make an appearance in Court on 23 January 2020.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has commended the efforts of the investigators who have been working around the clock to find and arrest the suspect.

“What has been key during this investigation has also been the public’s responsiveness in relation to the police’s appeal for information that has led to the suspect’s arrest,” commented the Commissioner.

The possibility of there being more arrests later cannot be ruled out as the investigation indicates that there was more than one suspect on the day of the incident.
