Man nabbed with firearms appears in court

DURBAN – It is alleged that on 16 February 2020 at 18:10, police officers from Kranskop acted on intelligence with regards to suspects in possession of unlicensed firearms.

The information received was that the suspect was going to board a taxi to Gauteng. The taxi was intercepted near a service station in Kranskop and the suspect was taken out of the taxi with his luggage. Upon searching his luggage two unlicensed firearms with and ammunition were seized. A variety of cigarettes as we are well as four different cellphones were also confiscated from the suspect.

The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of serious and violent crimes in Kranskop and surrounding areas. The suspect will also be profiled to check if he is linked to other serious cases. He is appearing at the Kranskop Magistrates’ Court today for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“We would like to stress to all those that possess illegal firearms to surrender them freely during this amnesty period as the full might of the law shall take its course if they are otherwise found out,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.
