Northern Cape: Woman given 10 years for attempting to murder her disabled son

Kimberley: A 40-year-old woman of Kagisho outside Kimberley, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Galeshewe Regional Court in connection with the attempted murder of her 15-year-old son.

On 16 December 2018, the accused was drinking alcohol with her friends at her home at Kagisho in the afternoon. The husband reportedly went to a local mechanic, angering his wife. The wife damaged her husband’s car with a beer bottle.

When the husband returned from the mechanic, he did not notice that his car was damaged. He was only made aware by his 15-year-old son who is wheelchair-bound. The accused was infuriated and the boy was removed from the wheelchair, put on his bed in the house and doused him with paraffin.

The boy was rescued by his father and some family members who managed to extinguish the fire.

The victim was admitted to the hospital with serious burn wounds and spent five months in hospital for medical treatment.

The accused was arrested the same day of the incident on, 19 December 2018.

The accused was found guilty in the Galeshewe Regional Court on 29 January 2020 and later sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for attempted murder. She was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
