Suspect behind alleged armed robberies arrested in the Eastern Cape

EASTERN CAPE – A 28-year-old suspect who has been linked to armed robberies in three magisterial districts in the Eastern Cape is behind bars.

On Wednesday, 19 February 2020, he appeared in both the Mthatha and Elliotdale Magistrate’s Courts respectively for an alleged cash-in-transit robbery last year November around Mthatha as well as a robbery of a security van that was collecting money from business premises in Elliotdale last year December.

On Thursday, 20 February 2020, he will be hauled to another court, this time in Mount Ayliff for his alleged involvement in the attack of another security van that was travelling to Magusheni pension payout in February last year. In all three incidents, a substantial amount of money was stolen.

Meanwhile, the Mthatha Serious Organised Crime Investigation had been following information of the suspect’s involvement in the armed robberies and on Monday, 17 February 2020, with the assistance of the SAPS Tactical Response Team and Crime Intelligence Unit, they managed to arrest him at Engcobo.

The Hawks investigators have confiscated an SUV which is suspected to have been used in the commission of the crimes. Investigations are still continuing and the possibility of arresting more suspects cannot be ruled out.
